question for poeple who have burned a lot of incense cones before?

I used sticks of incense (Nag Champa) for a long time, but when my shop curiously local ran out of everything they had was the Nag Champa incense cones left. So I bought some and took it home, instead of putting it on my stick wood, incense (obviously I would not do that, the whole house could have burned the thought) I got a cone (after lighting) in a nearly empty candlestick glass that still had a bit of candle wax or older who had wick in the left, so I must have done something wrong, because in about 2 minutes candle holder everything was smoking (not in the right way) and giving off a bad 'somethings on fire!? smell of burning. I turned off with plenty of water, but are confused wrong.So about what I did in all my Q is: How do I secure / burn incense cones correctly? cones should be done on a basis of something made necessary as the metal / aluminum foil?. If I am not as specific as you can THANKS

I burn mine on a smooth glass ashtray.
